The Species of the Known Space

The Farsight RPG Core Rulebook will featured seven playable humanoid species. Here’s a brief description of them.

_______________________________________________________

DRAALANI: Curious, sociable, empathic and sometimes whimsical. The Draalani civilization developed on a lush and dangerous moon that orbits around the gas giant Mahar. Their culture grew in the belief to be the smaller child of a benevolent god, overshadowing their skies like Mahar. This made them humble and tolerant towards the harsh life they led.

Indeed, the moon they lived on has always had an unstable and unpredictable ecosystem, that led towards extinction it’s inhabitants in more than a chance. This allowed Draalani to evolve into a sequential hermaphroditic species with a highly efficient immune system. They are the only species that can successfully mate with other humanoids and give birth to Draalani childs via a modified parthenogenetic process.

On Draal the newborn is immediately adopted by the whole community (there is no such thing as “family” on the lush moon) and is grown in the loving arms of the free society of Draal. Everyone will naturally infuse it’s carefree altruism and hedonistic attitude into a child, which will soon learn how to dance to the beat of the transcendent empathy of it’s species.

IRADIAN: Of the known species, iradians have been the first to have sailed among the stars, some say that it’s because of the deep bond they have with water. Their homeworld is almost fully covered with shallow oceans and, even though they are no longer aquatic creatures, their cetacean-like roots make them feel extremely comfortable in this element.

Being able to live beyond 500 years, the iradians have developed a particularly mindful nature and a peculiar sense of humor, which easily allows them to build peaceful relations with almost any other known species. Violence is rarely considered an efficient way to solve conflict in the society of Dashàr, while machinations and plotting are commonly on the agenda.
Their non-violent attitude places them in a perfect spot to satisfy their inexhaustible curiosity towards different cultures and lifestyles. So their placid individualism might lead them astray through the stars, to gather some uncontaminated knowledge from a culture oddly different from theirs or to preserve the environment of some virgin planet.

This is because of their different lifespan. A centuries-long life leads them to consider time through a different perspective, which places them under the lens of skepticism of the other species. Even though they proved their intentions to be (most of the time) focused on preserving life… on the long run.

KERGAN: Kergans are a mighty and fearless species with reptile looks, herculean strength and a feisty temper. Their homeworld, Ragash, orbits in a twin star system. This heavily influences the bodies and souls of the kergans.

On one side obliging this race to develop a natural resistance to radioactivity through the thick layer of scales that cover their bodies, allowing them to dwell on the scorching landscapes of Ragash. While on the other hand led them to consider life with merciless predatory eyes. The days on Ragash are indeed marked by one sun chasing the other, in a fratricidal loop that serves as the ultimate confirmation of a life divided among hunters and preys.

Honor, meritocracy and ambition rule one of the most harsh and competitive societies of the known space. Since their birth the Kergan citizens grow in a habitat of all-out competition, uncompromising punishment and archaic customs, often labelled as barbaric by other species. The natives of Ragash laugh with pride at such labels, knowing that “talk is cheap” and that respect was never denied to anyone who proved himself worthy to a Kergan.

JA’RAKI: This small amphibious species is among the most cute and felonious of the known space. They evolved form the damp marshes and jungles of Bakuna, from which they learned the fine art of constantly adapting and evolving through an extremely dynamic metabolism. Their minds and bodies react lightning-quick to situations while living at a pace that it’s hard to follow for other sentient races which are not used to their 32 hours day (or their flexible morality).

It’s unsure weather their interest for bio-engineering was a natural consequence of their hyperactive mind, which tends to be involved in bizarre lucubrations. What is sure it’s that this interest found fertile soil in the adaptive morals of the Ja’raki, more than in any other species.

Miirii, the capital city on their planet, is in fact unanimously considered a collective masterwork of the art of gene manipulation. It’s skyline is pierced by gargantuan skyscraping fungi, used as an enormous hive for the ja’raki population. The streets below are heaving of weird creatures engineered to fulfil any service or misdeed: from hormone guided fireflies to light the streets, to the elegant semi-organic “carapaships” floating in the air, ending up with the extremely forbidden bio-weapons (available for a convenient price at the notorious Bakuna Black Market on a daily basis).

NAVARIAN: Navarak is the arid homeworld of the most anatomically similar species to the terrans. A once blossoming green planet, it was turned to a desert expanse centuries ago by a solar cataclysm. Navarians found a way to survive in this inhospitable habitat by creating highly technological arcologies, linked together by a virtual reality known as Ataiva.

Cybernetics and overall technology have always been key stones of the Navarian culture. After the cataclysm they became even more important, ending up being a natural extension of the identity of the inhabitants of Navarak and their heritage to their people. This is true also on a biological level: their skin is decorated by a cybernetic subcutaneous net that start to develop in children during pregnancy. This net is later used to relate to their elaborate technology.

When it’s not enough to share experience into the Ataiva, they gladly fly through the canyons of Navarak in their personalized ships. Natural born pilots, they usually have an intimate relation to their vessels. They start working on them at a young age and ends up being a sort of unique and personal art piece during life.

Social relations are extremely important for navarians, so befriending one of them can be hard, but extremely rewarding. Once you’re able to go beyond “stranger” level, you are part of the “family”. And as the saying goes: “Don’t do wrongs to a Navarian’s friend”.

TERRAN (Humans): Enterprising, ambitious and heterogeneous, humans are known to be proud and peculiarly adaptive. They are among the last species to have been incorporated in the cosmopolitan community of the stars, in which they are known as terrans. It didn’t take long before they got to know themselves for their explorative nature and their innate charisma, which ended up gathering some suspicious looks.

Careless of these doubts, terrans have nevertheless proven to be powerful allies and clever teammates. Their society evolved in a thick multilayered web of political institutions, powerful corporations, scientific knowledge and philosophical open-mindedness; which constantly attracts a lot of alien species for it’s inspiring environment. This makes the human society probably one of the most hospitable of all the known stars.

Wherever they reach for, terrans end up being a catalyst for change and an accelerator of revolutionary ideas. This hasn’t always been positive in the past, surrounding them with an aura of unpredictability.

VALKARIAN: To a human, valkarians look like the humanoid version of a raptor-like reptile, but looks might be deceiving. Valkarians are in fact a mammal-like species native of Talaras, with a dominant lifestyle based on hunting and efficiency.

Even though Talaras is not the most harsh of the known world, it’s fauna surely is. It’s sentient inhabitants were able to become the dominant species of a selective food chain by becoming highly efficient pack hunters. In these groups, each individual was a naturally selected hunting machine, armed with lightning reflexes and reactive bodies.

This individualistic efficiency bred in their primitive lifestyle is now mirrored in their evolved society. Since it’s birth each valkarian is grown with a fervent civic duty, which usually makes them great soldiers and bureaucrats. Thanks to this common civic sense and to their predatory mindset, the valkarians have become one of the dominant species and one of the skillest military machine of the known space. No one would suspect that outside of it’s strict civic duties, the valkarian society is one of the most permissive and tolerant of all.
